Groundbreaking Ceremony at Liverpool Waters Central Docks

The next chapter of Liverpool’s waterfront regeneration has begun, marked by the groundbreaking ceremony at Liverpool Waters Central Docks, a £71 million infrastructure project set to redefine the city’s historic skyline.

The event took place at The City of Liverpool College Construction Hub, where guests were given a first look at the future of Liverpool Waters and joined in a ceremonial “first dig” to celebrate the start of enabling works.

The milestone marks the beginning of a transformative phase in the city’s 20-year waterfront plan. Once complete, the Central Docks neighbourhood will deliver over 2,350 new homes, a five-acre public park, and the essential infrastructure to connect a new community along the River Mersey.

As part of the project team, Safer Sphere is providing health and safety support to The Peel Group, working collaboratively with partners including Peel Waters, Walker Sime, Planit, and Hannan Associates MEP Design Solutions, among others.

GRAHAM Group has been appointed by Peel Waters to deliver £71 million of infrastructure works, supported by a £55 million investment from Homes England. The funding aims to accelerate the regeneration of Central Docks and is expected to unlock over £550 million in private investment.

The ceremony also included the opportunity to explore The City of Liverpool College’s brand-new onsite Construction Academy, a purpose-built facility dedicated to equipping students with the skills to shape the city’s future. Located on the historic banks of the River Mersey, the Academy recently welcomed its first students and will play an active role in Liverpool’s long-term regeneration.

This groundbreaking represents more than the start of construction; it marks the continuation of Liverpool’s evolution as a global waterfront city.

Safer Sphere is proud to be part of this collective effort to build safely, sustainably, and with a lasting impact for the people and communities of Liverpool.
