Our Role

We supported Fairhursts Design Group as Principal Designer Advisor on a standout carbon-neutral research facility for the University of Nottingham. Designed to push boundaries in sustainability and innovation, the building achieved both BREEAM Outstanding and LEED Platinum certifications. Our team provided specialist health and safety input throughout the design process, helping manage design risk in a highly serviced and complex laboratory environment.

Project Activities & Initiatives

Known as the GlaxoSmithKline Centre for Sustainable Chemistry, the project involved the creation of a modular, off-site constructed timber-framed laboratory building. The structure includes a Glulam and CLT frame, extensive PV arrays, CHP systems, natural wind-driven ventilation, and a wildflower roof – all developed to meet rigorous carbon-neutral standards. Internally, exposed timber panelling and structural elements reinforce the sustainability credentials of the design.

We advised on key design safety aspects, including the development of a fire hazard procedure for the timber structure, ensuring safety compliance without compromising design intent. We also provided input on access and maintenance strategies, which were especially critical due to the unique roof form and building shape.

The Results

This innovative facility not only sets a new benchmark for sustainable laboratory design but also demonstrates how collaboration between client, architect, and health and safety professionals can bring visionary buildings to life. The building is now a flagship example of sustainable chemistry in action, delivered safely and with future maintenance in mind.
