We’ve been working with the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (WWPT) and Donald Insall Associates since 2017, helping to bring this nationally significant estate back to life. Acting as CDM Client Advisor and Principal Designer Advisor, we’re supporting a multi-phase regeneration programme – making sure that conservation works are delivered safely, compliantly, and with long-term impact in mind.
From urgent roof repairs to the sensitive redevelopment of key heritage buildings, our role spans design risk management, safety assurance, and ongoing project support.
Wentworth Woodhouse is one of Britain’s grandest stately homes. When WWPT took on the site, the building was at risk of collapse. Roof leaks were so severe that 60 buckets were in regular use. We supported urgent stabilisation works, including the repair of 14,000 slates across 3,250m², conservation of decorative stonework, and improvements to insulation, drainage, and energy efficiency.
With the building now watertight, the focus has shifted to securing the estate’s future – giving historic outbuildings new purpose and opening up more of the site to the public.
Once derelict for 50 years, the Grade II* listed Camellia House has been restored as a tea room and community venue. The project also protects a rare collection of camellias – some of the oldest in the Western world.
Delivered with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England, and others, the £5 million scheme has created 22 local jobs, launched a Memory Café for people with dementia, and installed a Changing Places facility – one of the first of its kind for a UK heritage site.
We provided CDM Client Assurance and Principal Designer Advisor support throughout the project.
We’re also supporting the redevelopment of the Grade I-listed Stables into a multi-purpose events and hospitality venue. Design works are complete to RIBA Stage 4 and include:
A national events space
Banqueting kitchen
Café and shop
Overnight accommodation
Flexible community use areas
Offices
A portion of the £17 million project has secured £5 million Levelling Up funding, and work is now under way.
Wentworth Woodhouse is being transformed from a building at risk into a thriving community space. Our ongoing involvement helps make sure each phase of the regeneration is delivered safely, respectfully, and with a clear focus on legacy.
