An interview with Chris Cronin on his role as Mental Health First Aider at Safer Sphere.

What motivated you why did you want to become a Mental Health First Aider (MHFA)?

As a CDM/H&S Advisor, I believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. I want to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to support colleagues and co-workers with any mental health issues – I’m more confident because I’m competent.

I was approached by someone when wearing my lanyard. I signposted him to the right help and he said it really helped him.

Mental health first aid training promotes early intervention and support, reduces mental health stigma, and helps create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environmental culture.

What do you hope to bring to the role and what do you think the role will achieve?

I hope to bring a compassionate, empathetic approach. Promote awareness and understanding of mental health issues in the workplace.

I was part of the Safe to Talk initiative on North London Heat and Power project. Facilitating group talks helped me understand individuality. Being unbiased and understanding beliefs is key to offering proportionate assistance.

Early intervention can help prevent problems from escalating and ultimately lead to a happier, healthier, and more productive workforce.

What are the wider implications and value that come to H&S in being a MHFA?

The role helps reduce the risk of accidents and incidents related to mental health issues.

It’s valuable to promote a positive work environment and enhance employee well-being.

Learning the skills of communication and understanding are very transferable in a health and safety environment.

I think we’re helping to break down barriers, by flying the flag and showing that it’s okay to talk and if you are suffering, there are people here to help.
