Service Description

Safer Sphere was appointed on the refurbishment of the Rotherham Bus Interchange in the role of Prinicpal Designer Advisor. The project consisted of major repair works and the refurbishment of the concrete-framed multi-storey car park situated directly above the
Interchange. Some of the works included concrete repairs, replacement of waterproof deck coatings, the removal and replacement of the external cladding panels, upgrading mechanical and electrical installations, upgrading vehicle and passenger safety barriers, alterations to Interchange entrance structures, demolition of internal toilet structures, general fit out including floor wall and ceiling finishes, fixtures and fittings and the renewal of passenger information displays.

Under the CDM regulations 2015, the scope of services includes:-

  • Principal Designer Advisor services in line with CDM 2015
  • Assisting with H&S in designs, buildability and programme to reduce risk profiles
  • Assisting the Client in discharging their duties under CDM
  • Pre-Contract reviews with sub-contractors and packages

Service Challenges

Whilst the client and design team have led the design with best practice CDM principles, some of the key challenges to the included: –

  • The site is located within a congested city centre location with access through a series of one-way traffic management. With limited space for a welfare and storage compound
  • The existing structure of the car park was deteriorating and activities required careful planning
  • An Asbestos Refurbishment survey report identifies areas of works where Asbestos containing materials have been identified and safety precautions put in place for workers to minimise exposure
