Service Description

Safer Sphere was appointed as Principal Designer Advisors to ENGIE on a new Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Queens Hospital in Romford. The extent of works included:

  • A new 7 cot SCBU including new visitor’s WC, new entrance doors and modified entrance to the quiet room. The new unit will accommodate 6 cots and a single incubator.
  • Works carried out with modifications to the existing departure lounge forming a seminar/staff meeting room and enlarged restroom
  • Modifications carried out to create a new SCBU office
  • Enabling works to carried out to change the existing seminar room to waiting room
  • M&E alterations to suit new layout
  • Data obtained for modifications to suit a new layout

Under the CDM regulations 2015 the scope of services included are:

  • Principal Designer Advisor services in line with CDM 2015
  • Assisting with H&S in designs, buildability and programme to reduce risk profiles
  • Assisting the Client in discharging their duties under CDM
  • Pre-Contract reviews with sub-contractors and packages

Service Challenges

Whilst the client and design team have led the design with best practice CDM principles, some of the key challenges include: –

  • Building works carried out on within a live hospital
  • Vehicle length limitations on hospital roads
  • Plans and considerations to reduce any noise on the site
  • Restriction on vibration due to operating theatres below
