Service Description

Safer Sphere was appointed on the replacement of the main LTHW heating and domestic hot water plant, controls and associated pipework which serves the Annexe Building at King Edward 7th Hospital in London. The works that were carried out were within the Boiler Room on the 4th Floor of the Annexe building which is also the nurse’s accommodation located to the side of the main hospital. Under the CDM
regulations 2015, the roles are CDM Client Advisor and Principal Designer Advisor. The scope of services include:

  • Principal Designer Advisor services in line with CDM 2015
  • Assisting with Health and Safety in designs, buildability and programme to reduce risk profiles
  • Assisting the Client in discharging their duties under CDM
  • Pre-Contract reviews with sub-contractors and packages
  • Reviews of high-risk activities and applicable safe systems of  work for enabling packages
  • Advising on compliance with organisational operating procedures and minimum standards
  • Overseeing Principal Designer and Principal Contractor compliance in the construction stage

Service Challenges

Whilst the client and design team have led the design with best practice CDM principles, some of the key challenges to the included: –

  • Devising and implementing a plan to introduce new welfare facilities for nursing staff
  • Site access and parking limitations
  • Confined lift space to access the plant room on the 4th floor
  • Working within a confined area
